Star Trek was pretty frakin awesome

Alright well a few days after I've seen the latest Star Trek film and I'm still in awe of its greatness.

The movie opens up right into an action sequence showing a bit of a prelude to the main plot of film. It's quite a booming opening and works well in getting in some slick special effects before pulling things back a bit and getting to the main story. The rest of the film manages to stick a decent pace and never really reaches a point of dullness.

Characters and casting: fantastic. I know in my last post I made a comment about actors John Cho of Harold and Kumar and Zachary Quinto of Heroes as being odd and hilarious choices but both actors were awesome. All the actors did quite well in my opinion and added to the great sense of characterization the movie has. A personal favourite of mine was Dr. "Bones" McCoy played by Karl Urban because of how well the character matched the original without hitting a point of being cheesy.

That's actually something that can be said about the whole cast and setting, there's lots of references and similarities to the original but the whole movie has more action than expected from the original series and never gets lame. As a fan of the original I am very pleased to say that they did a fantastic job of staying true to the source material. I went with a group of non-Trekkies and everyone still seemed to have thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

All that being said, I guess I do have one complaint about the movie and that's that J. J. Abrams is a lazy ass bastard. He stuck a mini CLOVERFIELD into Star Trek! Come on man! Shockingly though it seemed much better suited as a monster to chase Captain Kirk around for two minutes than it did as a giant beast massacring New York.
